Orthognathic Surgery

Orthognathic Surgery

When a tooth can’t be saved or is compromising the health of the other teeth, tooth extraction surgery is a last-resort solution. Extraction may be needed due to traumatic damage, decay, periodontal disease, impaction, or crowding. Depending on the position of the tooth in question, the removal may be a simple or complex procedure—at Heartland Oral Surgery, we specialize in both.

Simple tooth removals are performed on visible, fully emerged teeth. Before your surgeon extracts the tooth, you’ll receive a local anesthetic to numb the tooth and gums and ensure your surgery proceeds pain-free. Your surgeon will then elevate the tooth out of its socket and carefully remove it.

Complex, or surgical, tooth extractions are performed on teeth which haven’t erupted from the gums or are being prevented from doing so. All tooth removals involve anesthesia, but before your extraction, you and your surgeon will decide if you should be fully sedated based on your specific circumstances and comfort level. During the procedure, your surgeon will make a small incision in the gum and remove the tooth. After, they’ll go over the guidelines for eating, drinking, and general aftercare to ensure your recovery goes as smoothly and painlessly as possible.
