Wisdom Teeth
Left over from the days when humans needed help chewing through tougher food, your wisdom teeth are your third set of molars. Thanks to modern cooking and utensils, these extra teeth are no longer necessary, and they’re typically extracted via wisdom teeth removal surgery when patients are between 17 and 25 years old.
Once your wisdom teeth are spotted on an x-ray, your dentist will determine if you need wisdom teeth surgery. Your wisdom teeth may be impacted or emerging at the wrong angle, which can be serious sources of pain for many patients. Alternatively, your mouth just may not have room for an extra set of molars. Not everyone needs wisdom teeth surgery, but if the molars are causing issues, they’ll need to be removed to avoid causing further problems, like cavities, gum disease, tooth decay, and abscesses.
